Cabin 10's 501(c)(3) funds two different scholarships. The first - the Rice Harrington Memorial Scholarship, funded by the New Folk Old Folk festival, was created in 2003 upon the death of Rice Harrington. Rice was the Counselor of Cabin 10 at Camp Flaming Arrow in Hunt, Texas way back when three of the original board members of what was to become Cabin 10, Inc. were young students of each other’s company. Fortunately, Rice was in the midst.
Rice died at the young age of 50 in July of 2003 and we found a way to keep his spirit alive by creating Cabin 10, Inc. The Cabin has hosted this music festival which started out as the Rice Festival (2003) and has morphed into New Folk ~ Old Folk. The name has changed but our mission has stayed the same . . . “supporting the arts through the gifting of scholarships”. As Rice taught us, we take only the satisfaction of helping others while having a great time doing it.
This scholarship is awarded each year to a graduating senior at San Marcos High School where Rice was an art teacher.
The second scholarship is the Mark (eYeBall) Kneeskern Scholarship. This scholarship is funded primarily by the Terlingua Music Bash event. Mark was known to many as The Last American Hitchhiker (more info https://www.amazon.com/Last-AMERICAN-Hitch-Hiker/dp/055729875X ). Mark would split his time between Terlingua, Texas; Chaffee County, Colorado; with his family in Iowa and many points in between and beyond.
This scholarship benefits the students of the Terlingua School District.
Cabin 10 is a 501(c)(3)
